Malta Kano’s instruction to wait

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Malta Kano’s instruction to wait is a piece of practical-sounding prophecy given when Toru Okada fears that Kumiko has left him. It directs him to wait for a call, predicts that it will come soon from someone whose name begins with O, and adds that a half-moon will last for several days. The advice gives Toru something concrete to hold on to while withholding whether the caller knows anything about Kumiko.

The Demand for Facts

Toru tells Malta Kano that he is lost and fears something awful will happen, but has no idea what to do next. He rejects her general reassurance and asks for facts—anything simple and concrete that he can see and touch. His insistence exposes the distance between his need for certainty and Malta’s way of speaking in rhythms, timing, and signs.

The Instruction and Its Predictions

Malta answers first with a direct command: wait for a phone call. When Toru objects that waiting is already all he has been doing, she narrows the prediction: a call should come soon from a person whose name begins with O. She does not identify the caller or promise that the call will resolve the disappearance. Asked whether the person knows something about Kumiko, she says she cannot say.

Malta supplies one further forecast, that a half-moon will last for several days. Toru asks whether she means the moon in the sky; she confirms that she does, then returns to the instruction to wait. The prediction is thus concrete in its images and timing, but remains unexplained in its connection to the crisis.

Waiting as a Rule

Before offering the O-name prediction, Malta compares events to the ebb and flow of tides: no one can change their timing, and when it is time to wait, waiting is necessary. Her later insistence that waiting is everything turns this into more than consolation; it is an instruction about how Toru should act while the situation remains unclear. Yet it cannot satisfy his demand for knowledge, because Malta explicitly leaves the caller’s significance unresolved.

The scene makes suspense out of a small amount of information. The initial prediction gives Toru a letter to watch for, while the half-moon adds an image whose relevance is not disclosed. At the end of the call, Malta says they will speak again soon and hangs up, leaving Toru with predictions to test against events rather than an explanation of Kumiko’s absence.
